There's an app for that.

A member of the 'Ansar Dimachk' Brigade, part of the Asood Allah Brigade which operates under the Free Syrian Army, uses an iPad during preparations to fire a homemade mortar at one of the battlefronts in Joubar, a suburb of Damascus, Syria, on September 15, 2013.

he looks like he's using it to figure out the angle- a kind of analog use of it.

That's very MacGyver of him. I applaud that sort of "can do" attitude.

The FSA have made some pretty amazing DIY weapons. See this post , also by The Atlantic.

Damn, I'm glad my service was up in '08. Dudes used to rain mortars randomly at a few of the air bases I landed at in Iraq. We mostly ignored it because their aim was so bad. Insurgents with apps, never imagined that would be a threat...

Wow. All I can say is, wow. That was amazing. I guess necessity really IS the mother of invention.

Not sure if it's actually an app, probably just a level, something to give him an angle. But still, pretty smart. I have never been shot at, let alone had mortars sent in my direction, whether well-aimed or not. I would imagine that a well-operated mortar could be devastating.

Yeah, the guys we were dealing with seemed to use dead reckoning and set the triggers on timers so they wouldn't be there when the mortars lit off. They missed most of the time but they got lucky at Ballad AB once and hit the BX at lunch time, killed a few airmen. Given a tool that could help aim I'm sure that they could have caused a lot more damage. Scary to think that things that required knowledge and education can be boiled down to a download...

Not saying it's a bad thing overall but given my experience crazy bad guys can get technology on the cheap these days. It's a different world...

Well, they'll be using mortars supplied by Uncle Sugar pretty soon.

Doubtful. No way we're going to repeat Afghanistan in Syria. If anything US drones might strike targets but my head will explode if we arm Al Qaeda, upon which I will refer to myself as Canadian and refuse to acknowledge anything in this post.
